I can honestly say that the massages I had with Joanna during my pregnancy were absolutely fantastic. I was in my third trimester so I was very, very achy and sensitive. I was amazed by how Joanna knew the correct amount of pressure to apply and the comfortable positions for me to lay. By the end I felt incredibly revitalised. I’d highly recommend Joanna to everyone.

Joanna The Massaging Midwife

What I do

I'm Joanna, the massaging midwife. I did my midwifery training with the wonderful Nissa and we now work together in the lovely birth centre at St Thomas' Hospital. I changed jobs last year, having spent some years cycling like mad across London to support homebirthing mothers. We have always been on the same wavelength midwife-wise and life-wise and we absolutely love catching babies together! I work part-time in corporate massage, treating many office-workers to an hour of calm in their busy days at a multinational company.

What I love about massage

I love giving nurturing massages to women through their pregnancies, getting to know how their body is adjusting to pregnancy and designing a treatment that will fit their physical and emotional needs.

I've seen enormous benefit from teaching birth partners massage techniques and useful positions to use in late pregnancy and labour.

I also love giving new mothers nourishing and peaceful treatments after birth, as well as teaching parents how to massage their beautiful babies.

The facts

I graduated with a first class Bsc degree from Kings College London in midwifery.

I have been a massage therapist for well over a decade and have specialised in maternity massage for eight years.

I originally trained with the Quantum Metta School of Massage, then trained with the International Association of Infant Massage (IAIM) in Edinburgh. I did my original diploma in pregnancy bodywork in Bristol with WellMother and have an APNT in pregnancy bodywork. I am fully insured and affiliated with the Federation of Holistic Therapies (FHT).

What next

There's always more to learn with bodywork and I like to continually update my skills. I recently qualified in deep tissue massage and this year I am travelling to India to train in Ayurvedic yoga massage, elements of which will work beautifully with pregnancy and labour massage. I have been practising yoga for twenty years and would eventually like to teach pregnancy yoga.

I was in my 42nd week of pregnancy when I had one of Jo’s incredible pregnancy massages in my home. By that stage there were lots of physical and emotional pressures building. Jo tailored the massage to my needs, and helped me to regain a sense of calm and control. I slept better that night than I had for ages...!
